The true value of an integrated view of project data

This is the second article in our series based on findings from the Unit4 and Vanson Bourne study of professional services firms. Our first article explored the hidden costs of unplanned work: the systemic bottlenecks, manual workarounds, and decisions made without full visibility that hold disconnected organizations back. Now, let's look at the other side: what happens when firms get connected, and what that means for your people, your projects, and your growth.

What if your talent leaders could match the right skills to the right project before it kicks off? What if your finance team could see real-time project profitability without waiting for month-end? For most professional services firms, those questions feel aspirational. HR scrambles to staff engagements. Finance reconciles spreadsheets. Project managers chase updates across disconnected tools. It all works, sort of, until it doesn't.

But a growing group of organizations have flipped the script. They've largely connected their project, financial, and people data, with some unifying it into a single, real-time view. And the results aren't incremental. They're dramatic.

The connected advantage: What 28% of leaders already know

Research from Unit4 and Vanson Bourne paints a stark picture. Only 28% of professional services firms operate as "connected" organizations, running on one unified platform or tightly integrated systems. The remaining 72% still work across disconnected tools and siloed data.

The gap between these two groups isn't subtle.

Connected organizations are over four times as likely to manage project performance proactively or predictively (75% compared to just 18% of disconnected firms). They've also seen a significantly smaller rise in unplanned work over the past year: 68% versus 87% for disconnected teams.

Think about what that means for your people and your operations. In disconnected firms, 88% rely on manual workarounds to get things done. Among connected firms, that number drops to 57%. Time wasted on low-value activities falls by nearly half: 43% versus 82%.

Perhaps most telling, disconnected teams are more likely to sometimes make decisions without full visibility (88% compared to 45% in connected firms) and far more likely to reverse decisions made on incomplete data (89% versus 51%). Every reversed decision costs time, trust, and money.

The strategic impact runs deeper still. Disconnected firms report a negative impact on their ability to take on new work at a rate of 71%, compared to 50% for connected firms. They also see higher damage to margins (69% vs. 58%), client satisfaction (67% vs. 55%), and employee wellbeing (66% vs. 49%).

These aren't abstract numbers. They represent missed revenue, exhausted teams, and frustrated clients.

Breaking down silos: One data model for finance, projects, and HR

So what separates connected firms from the rest? It starts with how data flows.

Unit4 ERPx is purpose-built for professional services organizations. It runs on a single data model that brings finance, projects, and HR/HCM together. Your project managers, finance team, and HR leaders all see the same numbers, without reconciliation delays or version-control headaches.

One of the biggest wins? Stopping margin leakage. Automated billing rules ensure that unbilled hours, missed expenses, and inconsistent pricing don't silently erode profitability. Every invoiceable item is captured and calculated accurately, whether it's time-and-materials, milestone billing, or fixed-fee work.

Kinetic IT, a Unit4 customer, illustrates this well. By connecting their project, financial, and workforce data, they achieved 94% forecasting accuracy, a level of precision that changes how you plan, bid, and deliver.

When your billing engine, project accounting, and resource data share one source of truth, you stop losing revenue to process gaps and start operating with confidence.

Staffing for success: Aligning skills with project demand

Connected data doesn't just help finance teams. It changes how you manage and develop your people.

For talent leaders, the challenge is familiar: matching the right skills to the right engagements, at the right time. When HR systems sit apart from project management, staffing decisions rely on memory, spreadsheets, or who happens to be available. The result? Mismatches that frustrate both clients and employees, drive up turnover, and quietly erode engagement.

Unit4 HCM tackles this head-on with a core skills library that maps employee competencies directly to project requirements. You can see who has the skills you need, who's developing them, and who's at risk of burnout from being consistently overbooked. Customizable pulse surveys and engagement tracking give you real-time insight into how your people are feeling, not just once a year, but continuously, even across a dispersed, project-based workforce.

This visibility also unlocks better workforce planning. Instead of reacting when a project kicks off, you can proactively recruit and develop talent based on your pipeline. Track billable hours alongside skills development, and you'll understand the true ROI of workforce investment: not just utilization rates, but whether your training programs actually translate into better project outcomes and higher engagement.

When people feel well-matched to their work, engagement rises and attrition falls. When they're thrown into projects without the right support, the opposite happens. Connected data gives you the insight to get staffing right consistently, protecting both project delivery and the people doing the work. And with performance management linked directly to compensation planning, you can recognize and reward contributions in ways that reflect how people actually work today, including project-based and shorter-tenure models.

From visibility to predictive intelligence

Connecting your data is the foundation. What you build on it determines your competitive advantage.

Connected organizations lead in AI readiness and adoption: 52% report wide use of AI across workflows, compared to just 16% of disconnected firms. That gap will only widen as AI becomes central to how professional services firms operate.

Unit4's AI agent, Ava, works alongside your teams to turn real-time data into predictive intelligence. Ava surfaces insights across finance, HR, and project management, helping you spot risks as they emerge, flag resource conflicts before they escalate, and act on opportunities that would otherwise go unnoticed. For talent leaders, that means identifying flight risks and skill gaps before they impact delivery. For finance teams, it means spotting margin erosion early enough to course-correct.

That kind of precision comes from combining historical project data with real-time signals. It enables you to forecast revenue confidently, anticipate resource gaps, and proactively manage margins across your portfolio.

The business value firms expect from this integrated visibility backs this up: 63% anticipate improved customer satisfaction and retention, 59% see improved profit margins on the horizon, and 54% expect the ability to take on more projects.

Those expectations aren't wishful thinking. They're grounded in what connected organizations already experience.

What you can do next

The evidence is clear: firms that connect their project, financial, and people data outperform those that don't, across virtually every metric that matters.

If your teams still rely on manual workarounds, make decisions without full visibility, or struggle to align skills with project demand, the cost of inaction keeps growing. And as AI adoption accelerates, the gap between connected and disconnected organizations will become harder to close.

Start by asking a few honest questions. Can your talent leaders match skills to engagements systematically? Can your finance team see real-time project profitability without waiting for month-end? Do your HR and project systems talk to each other?

If the answer to any of those is no, it's time to explore what a single, connected platform could do for your organization.

Unit4 ERPx and HCM are built for exactly this: giving professional services firms the integrated view they need to move from reactive firefighting to predictive, profitable growth.
