From strategy to success: A practical guide to Cloud transformation

The shift to Cloud-based enterprise systems is no longer a question of if, but when. As the moderator of our recent joint webinar with Info-Tech Research Group, I had the opportunity to participate in a focused session exploring key strategies for navigating and ensuring success in Cloud migration journeys.

I’m pleased to share key insights from that session, particularly the strategic perspectives offered by Robert Fayle, Advisory Practice Lead at Info-Tech.

We asked Info-Tech, one of the world’s most respected independent research and advisory firms, to provide an unbiased, research-backed look at the why, what, and how of migrating from on-premises systems to the Cloud.

Let me walk you through what we learned—and why it matters.

Cloud migration is a business imperative, not a technical upgrade

Robert kicked things off with a compelling point: Cloud migrations are rarely technical challenges—they’re people and process challenges.

While implementation logistics are critical, true success stems from strategic alignment and business ownership. Cloud ERP is not an IT system; it’s a business system. And that distinction changes everything.

A staggering 91% of organizations that moved to the Cloud experienced a significant uptick in system standardization and efficiency. The same percentage also reduced IT maintenance costs. Meanwhile, 90% reported measurable gains in productivity. These outcomes are not by-products—they are the purpose of Cloud transformation.

ERP strategy: The foundation for Cloud success

According to Info-Tech, Cloud readiness begins with the development of a robust ERP strategy. This foundational phase focuses on:

  • Clarifying your business drivers: Why are you migrating to the Cloud? What do you hope to achieve?

  • Aligning with corporate goals: These could include customer-centricity, ESG targets, employee experience, and new business development.

  • Driving stakeholder engagement: Success depends on mapping stakeholder influence and interest, and ensuring cross-functional buy-in, particularly from business units.

Cloud migrations falter when organizations treat them as isolated IT projects. The reality is that most critical decisions during the migration concern business processes, data governance, and change management. That’s why business ownership of the ERP is essential.

Embrace standardization to unlock innovation

Standardization is a cornerstone benefit of moving to a modern, Cloud-native ERP.

Robert emphasized that standardization does more than streamline operations. Standardization liberates teams from the burden of customization and complex workarounds. When you adopt the Cloud platform as designed, your organization can focus on outcomes, not workarounds.

This approach aligns technology with business value streams, making it easier to scale, innovate, and adapt to changing market demands.

Practical guidance for decision-makers

Info-Tech concluded the presentation with a diagnostic checklist that every organization should consider at any stage of the Cloud journey:

  • Do your teams understand the migration goals?

  • Is there clarity around processes and value streams?

  • Are key stakeholders aligned and committed?

  • Most critically: Do you have executive sponsorship?

Top management support is the number 1 success factor in any ERP migration. If your leadership isn’t fully engaged, the project is at risk.

That’s where structured support, such as Info-Tech’s four-day ERP Strategy Workshop, can make a significant difference. It ensures you have the clarity, alignment, and commitment needed to move forward confidently.

The Unit4 approach: Tailored, transparent, tested

After the strategy is in place, how does Unit4 help you execute? Joanna from our Cloud Migration Team outlined our three-phased engagement model:

  • 1.Engage: We begin with discovery and scoping using our Cloud Migration Assistant to assess your readiness.

  • 2.Migrate: Our structured migration delivery spans 3–6 months, tailored to your complexity.

  • 3.Thrive: We support post-migration value realization to ensure your organization leverages all Cloud capabilities for agility and growth.

This isn’t a lift-and-shift—it’s a transformation journey built on transparency, collaboration, and continuous value delivery.

Next steps

If your organization is still evaluating its Cloud strategy—or if you’re already mid-journey—remember this: Cloud migration is not just an IT initiative. It’s a business transformation effort that must be rooted in strategy, driven by people, and executed with clarity and precision.

On behalf of Unit4, I would like to thank Robert and the Info-Tech team for their valuable insights and also thank all of you who joined us for the session.
