Expanding procurement’s organizational impact with a unified Source-to-Pay approach

Four diverse professionals collaborate in a bright, modern office.

I recently moderated a Unit4 Source-to-Pay (S2P) webinar that explored the significant transformation happening within procurement - Expanding procurement’s organizational impact: Source-to-Pay value drivers for Service-Based Organizations

The conversation featured experts from The Hackett Group and Unit4, we discussed why a Source-to-Pay solution is the key to unlocking new levels of performance, turning procurement into a value chain that drives measurable impact across the entire organization.

In this blog, I'll share key insights from our discussion, including how leading organizations are leveraging S2P, advice for starting your own journey, and how to turn data into a competitive advantage.

Data supports the case for a unified Source-to-Pay approach

A unified S2P approach delivers quantifiable results, not just theoretical improvements. Research from The Hackett Group demonstrates that top-performing organizations see significant, measurable benefits from integrated S2P technologies.

Quantifying the Impact

Mike Falstich of The Hackett Group shared compelling data on the advantages seen by what he calls "digital world-class" companies. These organizations leverage technology to create a more efficient and effective procurement function. The statistics speak for themselves:

  • Sourcing cycle times are nearly 27% faster.

  • Leading companies achieve a procurement ROI that is over 2.5 times higher than their peers.

  • Spend with sustainable suppliers is almost 40% higher, which helps organizations meet their critical ESG goals.

As Mike noted, “Digital world class companies are achieving a 2.5x higher ROI from a procurement perspective – S2P technologies in general are really helping improve the organization as a whole.”

This data clearly shows that investing in an integrated S2P solution is not an expense but a driver of significant financial and operational returns.

Timely analytics are needed to navigate unpredictable environments

The ability to analyze spend data in real time is no longer a luxury; it's a necessity for making agile and informed decisions in a volatile market. The old methods of periodic data analysis are to slow to keep up with today's challenges.

Mike Falstich emphasized this point perfectly: “Gone are the days where we're taking 4-6 weeks to gather our spend data - that needs to really be done in real time."

With instant access to analyticsprocurement leaders can identify savings opportunitiesmanage supplier risk, and respond to market changes with much greater speed and confidence.

How integrated S2P can drive value for the entire organization

While the high-level benefits are clear, it's important to understand how S2P delivers value in day-to-day operations. Our discussion covered several practical applications that resonate with service-based organizations.

Addressing budgetary control and efficiency

For any budget-driven organization, an operational Procure-to-Pay (P2P) process is critical for maintaining visibility into commitments and ensuring you don't exceed your budget. A proper procurement system automates invoice coding by matching against purchase orders, which drastically reduces manual effort and accelerates payment cycles.

Jeroen Figee from Unit4 explained how this works: “If you embed a purchase process in your organization, you ensure that you have control over your commitments as organization and be compliant to your own purchase policies.”

This control prevents maverick spending and ensures every dollar is accounted for, providing the financial discipline that people-centric organizations require.

Mitigating inflation and price increases

These key components of S2P help organizations negotiate longer-term agreements to secure better terms and stabilize costs. It’s about moving from tactical price negotiations to strategic partnership development.

Jeroen offered an insightful perspective from Unit4's own procurement: "Our own head of procurement would argue that it's not the sort of the discount you get on the standard list price, but it's the discount you negotiate as part of the of the longer term agreement.”  This focus on negotiated, long-term value is where procurement can make a lasting impact.

Taking a phased approach to S2P Implementation

Embarking on an S2P journey can feel like a massive undertaking, but it doesn't have to be. One of the most important takeaways from our conversation was the value of a practical, phased approach.

Focus on Your Biggest Pains

You don't need a "big bang" implementation to see results. A successful S2P journey can be a step-by-step process that delivers immediate value by addressing the most pressing challenges first.

Jeroen's advice was to identify your primary pain point and start there. "My advice would be to start with what's giving you the most pain or what's the most challenging.”

Whether it's maverick spend, contract management, or supplier risk, focusing your initial efforts will create tangible results and build support for the broader initiative.

Quick wins result in long term success

Identifying areas where you can achieve rapid success is key to building momentum and proving the value of the initiative to the wider organization. These quick wins demonstrate ROI and encourage user adoption.

Mike echoed this sentiment, advising organizations to be strategic in their rollout. "Look for your pain points, getting the speed to value for that area, get some success under your belt and then go from there." This composable journey allows you to mature your processes at a pace that fits your organization's resources and readiness.

Elevate procurement’s impact today – take the next steps with Unit4

Our discussion confirmed that a unified S2P strategy - combining S2C for strategic procurement with P2P for operational procurement - can lead to 54% higher annual savings.

An integrated approach drives efficiency, enhances visibility, and provides the strategic insights needed to navigate today's complex business landscape. By moving beyond tactical cost-cutting and embracing S2P as a core value chain, procurement teams can elevate their impact and become indispensable strategic partners.

It was an interesting and inspiring conversation, and I hope it gave you some valuable food for thought on your own procurement journey. If you’re interested in hearing more, you can watch the webinar on-demand, visit our Source-to-Pay webpage, or get a tailored demo – today!
