Mike Ettling

Chief Executive Officer

I’m a CEO, Investor, builder of world-class teams, champion of diversity and continuous learner, and I’m passionate about people. From my first leadership role in the Boy Scouts, to exec positions in the tech industry, my career has revolved around elevating, engaging and enabling people. I joined Unit4 to get the market as excited in our unique approach to enterprise tech as I am. We’re building systems that change how people experience work, and the impact will be huge.

Outside of work I’m a family man, a Liverpool supporter, and a proud South African.

Chief Financial Officer

I’ve worked across a diverse range of businesses serving global markets and truly believe that finance is critical to leading change. The CFO’s leadership responsibilities and opportunities have grown beyond managing finances, measuring performance and delivering reports. I learned early on that a holistic understanding of the business and industry is essential to driving growth and success.

I spend my discretionary time with my family and watching and playing sports – some more successfully than others.

I have 29 years' experience in the technology industry as I have a passion for software, its beneficial impacts on society at large and in particular on businesses and people.

I became Chairman of the Unit4 Board in 2016, and am currently Chairman of Syncron AB in Sweden.

I also hold positions as Vice Chairman and Lead Director for Schneider Electric SE, and as Non-Executive Director at P2, Nice Systems Inc, MercuryGate and Taulia. I am the former President and CEO of Hewlett-Packard Corporation, and the former CEO of SAP.

I have been an entrepreneur in the software industry all my life. I co-founded Unit4 in 1980, led as CEO for more than 30 years and joined the board after acquisition, to help Unit4’s continuing growth and success. I am also a long-time board-member of the NL ICT industry association, which supports the global profile of the Dutch software industry. In addition, I invest in and help technology start-ups in the software and biotech space, as well as in several other industries in Europe.

Aside from my family, my personal interests are centered around the many aspects of technological development and their profound impact on our world.

I am an engineer by heart and by education. So, no surprise that I’ve embraced an engineering career, which took me from developing Fortran code for IBM (yes, that was long ago), to leading significant R&D teams at SAP and Amadeus (not so long ago), and now acting as a strategic partner for B2B software companies. I’ve always enjoyed solving problems, and the most interesting ones are related to the alignment between people, strategy and technology.

I sail around the world with family and friends on my boat, when I’m not working. In fact, sometimes, I also work from my boat – that’s the benefit (some would say drawback) of modern technology.

I have spent my career driving business change through People and Technology. I try to help businesses to be market leaders through having clarity of purpose, focus, customer success and the best team. I want everything to be high quality, impactful & distinctive. I joined the board as Unit4 has an opportunity to become the global software leader, helping mid-market companies to manage their People, Finances, Projects & Plans.

Outside work, two things have kept me relatively sane: my family and riding a bike.

I am a passionate technology investor and student of the software industry. Enterprise tech is increasingly about helping organizations create great people experiences, and I’m very excited about Unit4’s strategy and efforts to help lead this trend.

I joined Advent International in 2014 and help drive our tech investment activities in Europe. In 2017-18 I worked in operating roles at Unit4, so I know the company well.

In my spare time I’m an avid triathlete, hip hop music fan, and car enthusiast!

My career in the tech sector, working with the world’s largest telecoms organizations including Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone, has taught me the importance of great leadership and effective teamwork.

I’ve worked on five continents as the CFO of a PE-owned company, the Awaze Group, Europe's Leading Vacation Rentals Group and in supervisory board positions including Scout24 AG and Metro AG. Prior to Awaze, I was CFO of two PE-backed businesses, Arqiva and Unify.

I’m multi-lingual, fluent in English, German, French and Romanian and a keen tennis player. Within the Unit4 Board, I chair the Audit Committee.

I’ve spent my career in private equity investing in exciting services and technology companies in Europe and the United States. As a Managing Partner at Advent International, I seek to invest in industry-leading businesses with sustainable competitive positions and the potential to expand in attractive end markets. Unit4 is a prime example, as the company has the vision, products and the capabilities to drive innovation and success for its customers, partners and employees.

I’ve always had a passion for motorsport. So, when I’m not spending time with my family, I can be found racing 1950’s and 60’s sports cars on circuits in the UK and Europe (or paying invoices to repair them!).
